The Department of the Environment’s findings are very worrying.
The issue of homelessness in Ireland continues to dominate the social agenda among Irish citizens, and these figures, published by RTÉ, will do nothing to abate the growing national concern.
The Department of the Environment’s count for the month of February found that 912 Irish families were living in emergency accommodation, including 1,820 children.
This represented a worse return than January, where 1,830 kids and 884 families were without permanent residence.
Undoubtedly, Dublin has been the most seriously impacted, where some 790 families are without homes in the capital. This is in comparison to 21 families in the mid-east of the nation, 17 in the west and 30 in the southwest.
The figures for February illustrate that one family became homeless every day in Ireland.
