Stop the world: mobile phone-friendly cinemas are coming

Carl Kinsella

Stop the world, we want to get off.

There aren’t many places you can go these days where people aren’t relentlessly tapping away at various apps on their phone which, for the most part, is absolutely fine because, for the most part, that’s none of our business.

However, the cinema is one of the final few sanctuaries from the backlit screens and head-down atmosphere.

AMC Entertainment, one of the largest movie theatre operators in the world, are proposing to change all of that with the introduction of mobile phone-friendly theatres, with CEO Adam Aron telling Variety “When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear ‘please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.”

Aron is not yet sure exactly how AMC would go about this, but that a separate section for people who want to text while watching a movie might be a possibility.
