Here’s how much Enda Kenny’s Paddy’s Day trip to the US cost the government

Carl Kinsella

You’re about to be mightily ticked off.

Whenever we book a holiday, whether it be a transatlantic flight or a short trip to London, we look for the best possible value…

This does not seem to be travel philosophy of the Department of the Taoiseach, judging by the most recent Foreign Travel Report, which includes details of Enda Kenny’s recent St. Patrick’s Day trip to Washington DC.

The Taoiseach’s return flights from Dublin to Washington between March 13 and March 15 cost €9,257.40. The flights for the Taoiseach’s Private Secretary cost exactly the same.

This was not the full extent of the travel expenditure, however, as further members of Kenny’s entourage were paid for, including his security detail (€ 3,249.55), the Department’s Secretary General (€ 1,690.42), and the government Press Secretary (€ 3,199.55).

The Taoiseach’s wife Fionnuala also travelled alongside the company, with her flights coming to €3,112.

Other government figures also travelled to represent Ireland in Philadelphia and New York. The full cost of the week to the country came to roughly €34,000.

All we can say is that the planes must have been carved from solid gold. The full travel report can be read here.
