Irish people are officially the biggest film fans in Europe

Carl Kinsella

Irish people have been revealed as the biggest film fans in the EU after recent data shows that we go to the cinema more than any other nation in Europe.

Data published by the International Union of Cinemas shows that Irish people go to the pictures at a rate of 3.3 admissions per capita per annum.

This is more than double the EU average of 1.6 admissions per person. Couldn’t possibly have something to do with the weather, could it?

France came in at second place, but even they registered 3.1 admissions. All in all, Ireland saw over 15 million cinema admissions in 2015.

Irish box office taking stood at €104 million in 2015, up from €100 million the previous year with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens being the biggest draw.
