TWEETS: The Field was on RTE last night and people were loving it

Conor Heneghan

A stone wall classic.

Few productions have had the cultural impact in Ireland over the last half a century or so as The Field, originally a play by John B Keane that was adapted for the big screen by Jim Sheridan in 1990.

Exploring the importance of land ownership in rural Ireland, both the play and the movie are magnificent pieces of work and RTE’s decision to air it as their midweek movie was greeted with much enthusiasm on Twitter.

Although set in the middle of the last century, The Field has aged very well and remains a great watch to this day, thanks in no small part to outstanding performances from the likes of Brenda Fricker, Tom Berenger and Richard Harris, who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of ‘The Bull’ McCabe.

Irish audiences were certainly enjoying the trip down memory lane last night.
