It’s no secret that A Song Of Ice And Fire author George RR Martin takes an abundance of inspiration from real world history, mythology and geography.
Irish fans may be excited to learn, however, that much of the Westeros map is based on the island of Ireland. In fact, it’s not just based on the Irish map – it’s virtually identical.
The only difference is it’s upside down. Pay particular attention to Co. Kerry (aka the Vale of Arryn), and the West coast (aka the Stormlands).

According to RTÉ, Martin confirmed this himself at a 2014 Comic-Con. One big difference is in Donegal/Dorne. The Dornish kingdom is elongated on the Westeros map well beyond the confines of Donegal, but otherwise the shape of the two lands is almost identical – if inverted.
