Popular Republican veteran set to mount presidential challenge to Trump

Carl Kinsella

Meet Evan McMullin.

Unless you’re the type to get eyeball-deep in the bubbling vat of American political culture, you won’t have heard of him. McMullin is the Chief Policy Director for the House Republican Conference in the U.S. House of Representatives… and he might just end up being the next President of the United States.

What is far more likely, however, is that McMullin has been so perturbed by Trump’s recent misfiring on the subjects of nuclear weapons and the death of Humayun Khan that he is stepping in, knowing that he will split the conservative vote and probably hand the presidency to Hillary Clinton in November.

McMullin was an undercover operative for the CIA for eight years since 2001 before moving into the private sector with Goldman Sachs.

He has frequently tweeted criticisms of Donald Trump, indicating that his purpose in the race would largely be to offer a viable, Republican alternative, in other words to torpedo the Trump-Pence ticket.

McMullin’s nascent campaign was broken this morning by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

Does this spell more bad news for Donald Trump?
