A famous and much-loved nightspot in Galway is to be demolished

Conor Heneghan

Many Galwegians will have very fond memories of this place.

The Warwick Hotel in Galway, the scene of many a great night out for Galwegians and outsiders for generations, is to be demolished to make way for a new development on the site in Salthill.

According to the Connacht Tribune, it is anticipated but not yet confirmed that a state of the art nursing home will replace the hotel, which was opened way back in 1933.

An application was lodged at City Hall in Galway this week by Rushmany Nursing Home Ltd to demolish the Warwick “in preparation for redevelopment”.

It is expected that a new nursing home will be built in its stead; Rushmany already own and operate a nursing home on nearby Knocknacarra Road and completed the purchase of the Warwick for approximately €700,000 in 2015.

The hotel was something of an institution in the City of the Tribes and while it closed its doors years ago, the fact that it is being demolished brings a definitive end to the era of one of the city’s most famous nightspots.

It will be sorely missed.
