The margins are pretty tight at the top.
SuperValu has once again been named as the most popular supermarket after a study conducted over 12 weeks ending 14 August by Kantar Worldpanel, a global expert in shoppers’ behaviour who regularly conduct studies of this kind in Ireland.
SuperValu commanded 22.6% of the grocery market share over a period that covered most of the summer months, a figure that places them on top of the pile, just ahead of Tesco (21.8%) and Dunnes Stores (21.2%).
It is the eleventh consecutive month that SuperValu proved to the most popular Irish supermarket, although Dunnes Stores will be encouraged by a growth of 5.8% on sales compared to last year, while Lidl’s market share of 11.9% is a record high for the retailer.

Sales have increased for the grocery market as a whole by 3.5% since last year, with the study revealing that the average basket of groceries costs 2.7% more than it did in 2015.
David Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel, said: “Over recent months the price of groceries has increased slightly, with an average basket now costing 2.7% more than this time last year. Areas where we have seen the most significant increases include vegetables, fruit and beer – all major categories for the retailers.”
