Over 3,000 Garda jobs to become available in major recruitment drive over the next four years

Conor Heneghan

The recruitment drive is aimed at increasing the size of the force to 15,000 in the coming years.

800 Gardaí will be recruited every year for the next four years as part of an accelerated recruitment programme by the Irish government.

According to RTÉ, an accelerated recruitment programme will see the recruitment of 800 Gardai in 2017 and 3,200 Gardaí on a phased basis over the next four years.

The recruitment drive is in response to an increase in crime throughout the country following a reduction in Garda numbers in recent years.

1,200 Gardaí were recruited in 2015, but there was still less of a Garda presence than there was in 2010 due to a five-year freeze on Garda recruitment, which started in 2009 and came to an end at the end of 2013.

The 800 available Garda jobs for next year, which will be announced by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, will be advertised on publicjobs.ie with a closing date of September 29.
