JOE meets Viggo Mortensen to talk Captain Fantastic, his Reservoir Dogs audition and Irish football

Paul Moore

This film has been getting rave reviews.

It’s very likely that you’ve suffered from cinematic fatigue this summer. Superheroes, spaceships and sequels are all en vogue but Viggo Mortensen’s new film, Captain Fantastic, arrives in Irish cinemas and it’s a breath of fresh air.

Simply put, the film succeeds because it feels like nothing that you’ve seen before. Matt Ross’ feature revolves around a father named Ben (Mortensen) that’s devoted to raising his six kids in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. While ensuring that they get a rigorous physical and intellectual education, the children remain cut-off from the world as we know it.

Without giving away too much, the family are forced to leave this paradise and enter the materialistic and capitalist world on a road trip that will challenge Ben’s ideas of what it means to be a parent.

We got a chance to chat with Viggo Mortensen ahead of Captain Fantastic’s release and he was utterly fascinating. Take a look as he chats about the social and political climate in the US, his early audition for Reservoir Dogs, working with Michael Fassbender and an enjoyable trip that he recently made to the West of Ireland.
