It’s believed to have been an “intentional” explosion…

29 people have been injured in an explosion in the Chelsea neighbourhood of New York overnight.

None of injuries are said to be life threatening but one person is in a serious condition.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear with officials ruling out a gas leak but Mayor Bill de Blasio has described the explosion as “intentional”.

“The initial indications is this was an intentional act,” Mayor de Blasio said.

Before adding: “We also want to be upfront saying that there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection to this incident.”

Police did a sweep of the neighbourhood following the blast and discovered a secondary device a couple of  blocks away.

According to CNN, the second device was a pressure cooker with wires attached to it and connected to a cell phone, similar to the device used in the 2013 Boston bombings.

Chelsea is a vibrant area in New York City with bars, restaurants and nightclubs usually very busy on a Saturday night.
