It’s still the same Sheriff in town, but they’ve a new Deputy for company.
SuperValu is still the largest supermarket in Ireland according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, but the chasing pack has gotten a lot tighter.
Dunnes Stores is now the joint second biggest supermarket in the country along with Tesco with the pair now neck and neck in the rankings. Dunnes increased their sales by 6.3% to draw level with Tesco.
Each now have a 21.6% share of the market, just back from SuperValu which stands at a 22.4% share.
The latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel cover the 12 weeks to September 11, and they show a growth in the Irish grocery market with sales up 3.7% year on year.
“Larger trips have boosted sales for Dunnes, with the average spend increasing by €2.50 to €37.20 in the latest quarter, compared with the same time last year,” said Kantar Worldpanel director David Berry.
“Dunnes has successfully tempted shoppers to add more expensive items to their baskets, with the average price per item rising to €2.05 – an increase of 12% on last year.”
In other news, Aldi with 11.4% of the market share, have narrowed the gap on Lidl who have 11.7% of the market share.
