WATCH: Violence breaks out on the streets of Sydney during Australia Day

A police officer and a woman sustained minor injuries as violence erupted on the streets of Australia’s biggest city.

Violent clashes between police and protestors took place in Sydney on the official national day of Australia on Thursday.

While January 26 is the country’s official holiday, it has been the cause of some controversy in Australia.

It has also been referred to as ‘Invasion Day,’ with many protesting the celebration of a day when British explorers first arrived on the continent in the 18th century and suggesting that a more appropriate date should be chosen instead.

Violent clashes took place between protestors and police on the streets of Sydney on Thursday, when a police officer and a woman sustained minor injuries.

According to ABC News, however, police said that the arrest of a 20-year old man was an “isolated incident in an otherwise peaceful demonstration” and that they were pleased with the overall behaviour of those who had gathered to protest.
