United States immigration controls WILL apply to dual-citizens, according to updated statement

Carl Kinsella

Reports have emerged on Saturday evening that Donald Trump’s executive order preventing entry into the United States by citizens of certain countries will also apply to people who hold two passports.

This means that a traveller who holds both an Irish passport and, say, an Iranian passport will not be exempt from the 90-day ban if they travel using their Irish passport, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal claims to have reviewed a “statement that the State Department is due to release” which clarifies that the ban actually extends beyond citizens of the Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Syria.

WSJ reports the statement as saying: “Travellers who have nationality or dual nationality of one of these countries will not be permitted for 90 days to enter the United States or be issued an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa.”

“Those nationals or dual nationals holding valid immigrant or nonimmigrant visas will not be permitted to enter the United States during this period.  Visa interviews will generally not be scheduled for nationals of these countries during this period.”

The only dual-citizens holding a passport from one of the seven countries listed who will be exempt from this ban are those who are also US citizens.
