The Scarface remake has cast its new Tony Montana

Paul Moore

Say hello to my little friend!

Any remake of a beloved film is always going to incite some sort of backlash, but in the case of Brian De Palma’s blood-soaked epic Scarface, we’re expecting fans of the original to go on a murderous rampage that involves chainsaws, shotguns and enough cocaine to kill an elephant.

Ok, we’re going slightly overboard but that’s exactly what Tony Montana would do if he felt betrayed.

With news that the 1983 film is being remade, fans should be appeased though by the fact that the new adventure will be a modern-day retelling of the rags-to-riches immigrant story, but the location has been changed from Miami to Los Angeles.

In a decision that will give Donald Trump nightmares, Tony looks set to be Mexican in the remake.

All things considered, ruling a criminal empire in Miami is very different to remaking a beloved film in Hollywood. See, in Miami, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

In Hollywood, you gotta cast the leading actor first. In this case, it’s the supremely versatile Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Elysium and The Terminal). Then when you get the leading actor, you get the buzz. Then when you get the buzz, then you get the director.

Antoine Fuqua (Training Day and Shooter) had originally been attached to direct, but he has since dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

Whoever the studio hire as director, we just have one warning for them. Don’t get high on your own supply.
