140 civilian staff are to be recruited by An Garda Síochána in a plan to put more Gardaí onto the streets.
According to RTÉ, the plan was announced today at the graduation of Gardaí in Templemore.
This summer, the recruitment of 140 people will begin for a variety of desk jobs with the aim being to free up Gardaí from these roles and put them on them on the streets.
By the year 2021, the plan is to increase the number of civilians in the force from the current 2,000 up to 4,000 while the entire police force is expected to be bolstered up to 15,000.
Gardaí numbers had dwindled in recent years after a recruitment freeze was implemented in 2009 and a large number of the current force retiring in the years after it.
It’s expected that there will be even more recruiting of civilians before the end of the year.
