The men, from Algeria and Morocco respectively, were arrested earlier today.

Two men, from Algeria and Morocco, were arrested on Monday under anti-terrorism laws introduced in Ireland two years ago.

The men, aged in their 30s and 40s, were arrested in the Dublin area by members of the Counter Terrorism International Unit.

The arrests were made for offences pursuant to the Terrorist Offences Act 2015, an amendment of the Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005 which created three new offences, including public provocation to commit a terrorist offence, recruitment for terrorism and training for terrorism.

These offences can carry sentences of up to 10 years imprisonment.

A statement released by An Garda Síochána on Monday evening read: “On the 8th of May 2017 a male Algerian national and a male Moroccan national in their 30’s and 40’s were arrested in the Dublin area for offences pursuant to The Terrorist Offences Act 2015 as amended by members of the Counter Terrorism International Unit.

“They are both currently detained at Blackrock Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. A number of searches were also carried out in Swords, Stepaside, South Circular Road and Trim.”
