Good news if you want Michael D. Higgins to do a second term as President of Ireland

He’s been backed for seven more years…

Michael D has managed to squeeze his way into the hearts and minds of the Irish people. He speaks out about the inequality in our country, and he radiates integrity optimism, even when things are at their lowest ebb.

Now, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has given his backing to Michael D. Higgins for another term as President of Ireland.

The much-loved president’s first term comes to an end next year, but according to the Irish Times, the Taoiseach has given his endorsement for him to take up another term, should he wish to do so.

“A sitting president is independent and has the authority under the constitution to nominate himself for re-election. I think he has done a fabulous job as president.”

“I really already lean on his advice and his experience. It is an advantage as a young Taoiseach to have an experienced president to bounce things off and consult with,” Varadkar said to the Irish Times.

“So the first decision – before we even think about other candidates – is to see whether President Higgins nominates himself.”

For now, we don’t know if Michael D intends to take up a second term as President of Ireland, but in the meantime you can enjoy this picture of the man himself in Galway, chatting to a man with a bird on his shoulder.

Yes, we love this picture…
