As Hurricane Ophelia heads north, PSNI issues warning for motorists

Carl Kinsella

As Hurricane Ophelia tore through the Republic of Ireland, three people were killed — two of whom were in their cars at the time.

Moments ago, the Police Service of Northern Ireland warned that motorists should categorically avoid driving while the storm passes over the north of Ireland.

While the storm has begun to ease off in certain areas further south, Met Éireann’s Red level warning remains in place for the entire island until 1am.

The PSNI Road Police Twitter account has said that motorists must avoid roads unless “absolutely essential.”

The account has also provided updates on road closures in the North.
