No, it’s not Danny Healy-Rae…
A Fianna Fáil TD has said that people should be allowed to drive after having “one or two drinks”.
The new Road Traffic Bill would see those detected over the blood alcohol limit automatically disqualified but Sligo-Leitrim TD Eamon Scanlon said that Ireland’s drink driving laws are already strict enough.
Under the new law, it would impose a three-month driving ban for those caught with a blood alcohol level of between 50mg and 80mg per 100ml.
But Scanlon doesn’t think these people are causing accidents and believes more effort should be made to catch those with a blood alcohol level of 100mg – 200mg, as he thinks they’re a bigger problem.
He believes the law will particularly target rural and isolated communities.
Speaking on Ocean FM, he said: “One or two drinks, I don’t think, genuinely, will create a problem for most people – I don’t think it would.
“I think what we’re doing is a bit excessive. Even as we are, the regulations in this country are way more excessive in other European countries,” he added.
