A status yellow weather warning is in effect for Christmas Eve, with strong and gusty southwesterly winds expected in Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

The warning was issued by Met Éireann at 4pm on Saturday, and is valid from midnight on Christmas Eve until 8pm that evening.

It follows a previous warning issued on Saturday morning for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, with periods of heavy rain expected at times through Christmas Eve and overnight into Christmas morning.

Temperatures will range from 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, with the coldest temperatures occurring in the north and west towards morning.

A more unsettled period of weather is forecast from Christmas Eve onwards, with the risk of frost and ice returning.
