Gardaí confirmed that a murder inquiry is underway on Monday evening.

Gardaí in Limerick are investigating what is believed to be the murder of a 40-year-old man whose body was discovered at home in the city centre on Sunday.

The change in the status of the investigation followed a post-mortem examination by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy in Limerick tonight.

Martin Clancy’s body was found inside a residence on Little O’Curry Street in Limerick city centre by a relative on Sunday evening.

It’s understood that Mr Clancy’s body showcased a number of injuries.

A Garda forensic team was called to the scene on Sunday night and a post-mortem examination was carried out at Limerick University Hospital today, resulting in the change in status.

Gardaí preserved the scene at 6.30pm on Sunday and have since cordoned off the small street, adjoining Windmill Street and O’Curry Street.

In a statement this Monday night, a spokesperson said: “Following the conclusion of a post mortem examination today, Monday 8th January 2018 investigating Gardaí at Henry St in Limerick have now launched a murder investigation.

“Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses and are particularly anxious to speak to anyone who may have seen Martin or spoke to him since Monday 1st January to contact the incident room at Henry St on 061-212400, the Garda confidential line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
