Met Éireann have issued a status yellow weather warning affecting seven counties

Conor Heneghan

Spot flooding is likely in the counties affected.

Just when it looked as if Ireland was going to enjoy a few days without the weather warnings that seemed permanent over Christmas and into the New Year, another one has arrived.

On Wednesday morning, Met Éireann issued a status yellow weather warning for all six counties in Munster – Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford – and Galway ahead of spells of heavy rain from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.

The warning comes into effect at 4pm on Wednesday, with initial showers expected to merge to longer spells of thundery rain.

Surface water and spot flooding is likely, with between 25 to 40 mm of accumulated rainfall a possibility in affected areas.

The warning will remain in effect until Thursday morning, 11 January, at 4am, when temperatures will have dropped to as low as -1 degrees ahead of a very chilly day throughout the country on Thursday.

The early forecast for the weekend isn’t much better, with plenty of spells of heavy rain forecast, while “a showery regime” is set to take hold for the early days of next week.

Doesn’t sound particularly promising, doesn’t it?
