Brexit supporter has an absolutely moronic and dangerous idea to solve the Irish border dispute

Paul Moore

Christ almighty.

During a recent discussion on LBC, one Brexit supporter named Trevor said that the UK should “go to war” with the Republic of Ireland in an effort to solve the border dispute.

As we all know, the Irish position regarding the border has been very clear.

The government have insisted that no hard border should exist and that the terms and conditions of the backstop should be an integral part of a withdrawal treaty that’s agreed between the UK and EU – due to be formalised by mid-October.

In the absence of a withdrawal treaty, the UK is scheduled to leave the EU next March without a transition period – meaning that EU laws and agreements would cease to apply to the UK.

As we’ve frequently seen, Ireland’s definitive and clear stance has upset some Brexiteers – The Sun’s attacks on Leo Varadkar have been well documented – because those in favour of Brexit feel that the Irish government are exaggerating the severity of the border issue.

Of course, the Good Friday Agreement and EU rules must also be adhered to but a recent caller into Clive Bull’s show on LBC has provided a more warmongering solution.

As you can see below, this man named Trevor told the host: “It’s only been complicated (border dispute) because it’s been made complicated. There’s been deliberate obstacles put in our way, all the time. On Northern Ireland, all we have to do is say to the EU: ‘we’re not going to put a hard border there. If you want one you put it up.’ We shouldn’t be dictated to by the four or five million Irish. They’re gonna lose more than we do.”

He then proposed a more draconian and violent solution.

“What we’re saying is we’re not going to renege on the Good Friday Agreement. We should turn around to Southern Ireland say ‘So what you’re saying then that if we have a hard border, you want to go to war.”

The host responded: “Well nobody mentioned this during the referendum. This is your position now that we suggest to the Republic that there might be a war?”
