Police in Sweden are being investigated after a 20-year-old man was shot dead.
Eric Torell, who had been diagnosed with Down Syndrome and autism, was shot dead by police in Stockholm while carrying a toy gun. Torrell had been reported missing from home after he ran away.
Swedish media has reported that when Torrell was approached by police he was ordered to drop the “gun” and lay on the ground. However, Torrell’s conditions meant that he was unable to verbally communicate with the officers.
He was shot, and despite being rushed to hospital, was pronounced dead. His killing has provoked much outrage.
According to CNN, Torrell’s mother said: “Even if he made a mistake, even if he went outside with a pistol thing, a toy gun, do they have to shoot him dead because of that? It was light outside.”
