Now that the nights are getting a little longer and the heatwave has passed – booooooo – it’s time to face the autumn and winter months, but fear not, as there are some cracking films coming to your cinema very soon.

Searching
Plot: After his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her. A thriller that unfolds entirely on computer screens.

Watch it because: It’s one of the most high-concept thrillers that we’ve seen in years.

The Nun
Plot: A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.
Release date: 6 September
Watch it because: Those scenes in The Conjuring 2 were exquisite and we might be on the fringes of a new horror franchise.
American Animals
Plot: Four young men mistake their lives for a movie and attempt one of the most audacious heists in US history.
Release date: 7 September
Watch it because: It’s one of the best films of the year. Original, gripping and entertaining as hell. The last half an hour is so tense that you’ll feel like an elephant is standing on your chest.
The Predator
Plot: When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters’ return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
Release date: 13 September
Watch it because: It’s Predator. We don’t need to say anything else apart from… GET TO THE CHOPPPPPPPA!
Crazy Rich Asians
Plot: The romantic comedy follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore.
Release date: 14 September
Watch it because: In the US, this rom-com was the sleeper hit of the year and loved by critics. It’s time to see what all the fuss is about.

A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot
Plot: One night Majella O’Donnell took her teenage son Philly to be shot in both legs. Majella, Philly and his shooters all live within an extraordinary community in Derry.
The Troubles officially ended in 1998 but this community is still at war. They do not accept the government or police. All this happens within the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom. How do you bring your son to be shot? What happens afterwards? How does family life continue?

Watch it because: This documentary has been gaining some serious buzz and word of mouth praise ahead of its release. As you can see here, we’re fairly excited for this one.

Mile 22
Plot: An elite American intelligence officer, aided by a top-secret tactical command unit, tries to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of the country.
Release date: 19 September
Watch it because: Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg make some very good films together (Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, Lone Survivor) and when you throw Iko Uwais (The Raid) into the mix, this will be explosive.
The Little Stranger
Plot: Dr. Faraday is a country doctor. During the summer of 1947, he tends to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked as a housemaid. The Hall, which has fallen into decline, is home to Mrs Ayres and her two children, Caroline and Roddy. After taking on the new patient, Dr. Faraday finds the Ayres family’s story will soon become entwined with his own.

A Star is Born
Plot: A movie star helps a young singer/actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

Watch it because: Everything we’ve heard about Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut has been extremely good and at this rate, it might be in contention for Oscars.
Venom
Plot: Tom Hardy gets to unleash the beast as the famous Spider-Man antihero gets his own standalone film
Release date: 4 October
Watch it because: Tom Hardy. Michelle Williams. Riz Ahmed. Now, that’s a solid cast.
Bad Times at El Royale
Plot: Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption – before everything goes to hell.
Release date: 12 October
Watch it because: This looks absolutely bonkers and director Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) has a knack for working on pop-culture favourites (Daredevil TV show, Cloverfield, Lost, Buffy).

First Man
Plot: A look at the life of astronaut, Neil A. Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. Based on the book, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong.

Watch it because: Damien Chazelle + Ryan Gosling + biopic of American hero = Oscars… we assume.
Mandy
Plot: Mandy is set in the primal wilderness of 1983 where Red Miller, a broken and haunted man hunts an unhinged religious sect who slaughtered the love of his life.

Watch it because: Nicolas Cage going full-Cage in a way that Cage can only Cage.

Rosie
Plot: The story of a mother trying to protect her family after their landlord sells their rented home and they become homeless.
Release date: 12 October
Watch it because: Roddy Doyle wrote the script and if it’s half as good as anything in The Barrytown Trilogy, we’re in for a treat.
Halloween
Plot: Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
Release date: 19 October
Watch it because: John Carpenter is on board, which is a very good sign. The trailer also looked extremely good.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Plot: A chronicle of the years leading up to Queen’s appearance at the Live Aid concert in 1985.
Release date: 24 October
Watch it because: One of – if not THE – greatest frontman of all-time finally gets the big screen treatment.
Slaughterhouse Rulez
Plot: An illustrious British boarding school becomes a bloody battleground when a mysterious sinkhole appears at a nearby fracking site, unleashing unspeakable horror.
Release date: 31 October
Watch it because: Pegg and Frost are working together on a horror-comedy. Granted, it’s the first feature from their new production company but we’re excited to see what’s in store.
Widows
Plot: Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.
Release date: 6 November
Watch it because: Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame, 12 Years A Slave) is a director on a roll and the idea of him doing an action film should separate it from the rest. Also, the cast in this is incredible.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web
Plot: Young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.
Release date: 9 November.
Watch it because: Director Fede Alvarez made Don’t Breathe, one of the best thrillers in recent memory, and Claire Foy seems like a very shrewd choice to play the beloved anti-hero.
Overlord
Plot: American soldiers get trapped behind enemy lines on D Day and they battle evil forces.
Release date: 9 November
Watch it because: Nazis. Zombies. Explosions. Battles. Flamethrowers. What else do you need?
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Plot: The second instalment of the Fantastic Beasts series, set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, featuring the adventures of magizoologist Newt Scamander.

Watch it because: Yeah, we think there are a few people that love magic.
Robin Hood
Plot: A gritty take on the classic Robin Hood story.
Release date: 21 November
Watch it because: A director of Peaky Blinders is attached to this and the cast is very strong with Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan, Taron Egerton, Ben Mendelsohn all starring.
Serenity
Plot: The mysterious past of a fishing boat captain living in the Caribbean comes back to haunt him, ensnaring his life in a new reality that may not be what it all seems.
Release date: 23 November
Watch it because: Speaking of Peaky Blinders, this is directed by the show’s creator and we’ve really high hopes for it.

Anna and the Apocalypse
Plot: A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven during the Christmas holidays, forcing Anna and her friends to fight, sing and slash their way to survival with a fast-spreading undead horde in relentless pursuit.

Watch it because: There are times when you just want to watch something that’s completely bonkers and original. This sounds like the perfect fit.

Creed 2

Watch it because: The first one was brilliant and right now, Michael B. Jordan can do no wrong.
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Plot: Six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.
Release date: 30 November
Watch it because: The original was superb and after seeing some brief footage of the sequel, it goes heavy on the pop-culture jokes and they all land. A scene with Disney princesses is absolute gold.
The Old Man and The Gun
Plot: An elderly bank robber, who had managed to escape from prison over a dozen times in his life before moving to a retirement community, looks to spice things up with another heist.
Release date: 7 December
Watch it because: Elisabeth Moss, Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, John David Washington. Awards. Lots of awards.
White Boy Rick
Plot: The story of teenager, Richard Wershe Jr., who became an undercover informant for the police during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison.
Release date: 7 December
Watch it because: It’s directed by Yann Demange, who previously made the absolutely brilliant ’71.

Watch it because: James Wan is an extremely good choice as director and after seeing the first trailer, they seemed to have nailed the fun, silly and action-packed tone.
