The best action films of the decade won’t be getting another sequel

Paul Moore

Time to go on a rampage.

Expertly filming a scene which involves a man beating the living hell out of two people that are armed with a hammer and a baseball bat. Now, that’s either the sign of a genius, or a mad man.

Thankfully for film fans everywhere, Gareth Evans is a bit of a genius because his work on The Raid films revolutionised how Hollywood approached the action genre. Out went the quick cuts, frantic pacing and tight close-up shots. In came, well, absolute carnage.

As stated countless times, the Indonesian actioner embraced the beautiful destruction that unfolded as Iko Uwais was let loose on a tower block/prison yard/train carriage/alleyway/nightclub that’s full of henchman, and since being released, Evans’ films have only grown in cult-status.

We’re absolutely pumped to see what the Welsh director has done with Apostle – more on that film here – and with Uwais currently starring in Mile 22, action fans are desperate to see the pair reuniting on The Raid 3.

Well, just like those poor police officers that tried to escape through the floorboards, our hopes have been dashed and torn to shreds.

In an interview with SlashFilm, Evans has ruled out any more instalments in the immediate future.

“The Raid 1 and 2 were incredible for me, but I just didn’t want to be doing The Raids all the time. And the more time has gone on from that, the less interested I’ve been to go back there. What we did with The Raid 2, we kinda close that off nicely, so it didn’t really appeal to me to jump back into that world again,” he said.

The director also followed up these comments with a similar interview in CinemaBlend. but he did admit that at one point, wrapping up the trilogy was on his radar.

“The Raid 3 was… at one point it was on my radar. I had a full idea. I know what the storyline would have been. But I think enough time has passed now that I think I’m not likely to go back and revisit it. We had a lot of fun making those films, and I think we came to a nice, sort of natural conclusion with it. And I think sometimes you can have a little bit too much of a good thing.”

While we’re delighted to see Evans develop his skillset and range with Apostle, we’d still love to see him return to make The Raid 3.

After all, who else is better at filming carnage like this?
