This is what they’re arguing about…

Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow was forced to apologise on Monday night after comments he made to an MP.

On another eventful night in Westminster, MPs voted to pass the Letwin Amendment, which takes control of the agenda in the House of Commons on Wednesday when they are expected to vote on a series of different ways forward, known as indicative votes.

In heated Commons scenes, the Bercow told MP Greg Hands that he “wasn’t a very good whip” as he berated him for “disorderly” conduct.

Bercow said: “I don’t require any help from the right honourable gentleman, the member for Chelsea and Fulham. He wouldn’t have the foggiest idea where to start.

“He was once a whip, he wasn’t a very good whip. It’d be better if he kept quiet.”

Hands was deputy chief whip under David Cameron between 2013 and 2015.

The House erupted into roars from Tory MPs following Bercow’s comments necessitating in Bercow saying: “If I have caused offence I very happily apologise. I have no difficulty with that.”

The comments occurred after 10.30pm on Monday night as the UK was going through a major moment of constitutional change, and this is what they were arguing about in parliament.

They only got back to the matter at hand when another MP reminded them a “major constitutional innovation” just took place.
