Thousands of Irish customers hit with banking delays

“We are aware of an issue with lodgements into bank accounts”.

Thousands of Irish people have been experiencing banking delays due to a European bank holiday.

Although 1 May was not a Bank Holiday in Ireland, it is a holiday in many parts of Europe.

In terms of a knock-on effect, this closure meant that some Irish customers faced delays when receiving their wages/social welfare payments, or making other financial transactions.

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection have released the following statement: “We are aware of an issue with lodgements into bank accounts this morning, including Social Welfare payments. The Banks have confirmed that all SW payments due to be lodged in people’s bank a/c’s this morning will be processed & in their accounts today. If you have any query regarding your payment not being in your bank a/c today, we would ask you to contact your Bank directly.”

The Department of Education and Skills had this to say on their official page: “Salaries and Pension payments due to issue today, Thursday, 2 May 2019, to individuals paid by the Department of Education and Skills will be lodged to bank accounts by lunch time today. The delay arose as Wednesday, 1 May 2019 was a European bank holiday although a normal working day in Ireland.  As a result no electronic Euro salary or pension payments were processed to bank accounts outside Bank of Ireland.”

Various Irish banks have re-assured customers that payments will be processed today as banks get back to normal across the continent.

With regards to specific banks, Bank of Ireland issued a warning on 26 April that delays were possible.

Earlier this morning, their online support team have also said that: “Yesterday was a European Bank holiday which meant that no electronic Sepa payments were processed. However, we understand payments are now being applied to customers accounts.”

AIB have said that: “Due to the European Bank Holiday yesterday, there is a slight delay in incoming payments this morning. Any payments due into customers’ accounts will be applied throughout the day. Please continue to monitor your account. Thanks for your patience”.

Elsewhere, Permanent TSB have said: “Following the European Bank Holiday on May 1st, all credits due today May 2nd should reach customers’ accounts by mid-morning. Dear Customers, please note that following on from yesterdays European Bank Holiday, all outstanding inbound payments have now been credited to customer accounts.”
