GoSafe speed camera operators reach agreement on pay and reconfirmation of toilet break policy

Rudi Kinsella

An agreement has been reached.

Management and the staff representative body at GoSafe have reached an agreement following a strike that was undertaken by staff employed as speed camera van operators.

The strike was an attempt to draw attention to the working conditions of those operating the vans, who said that they sometimes spend as much as 11 hours without leaving the van.

The proposed agreement, which succeeds an existing arrangement and will cover the three-year period January 2020 to December 2022, is subject to approval in separate ballots of the company’s 130 staff.

Pay improvements include increases in base rate pay with additional increases in bank holiday rates, employer PRSA contributions and holiday terms.

There was also a number of clarifications made with regards to the toilet break policy.

Team members can take toilet breaks at any time and are free to temporarily suspend their monitoring activities to facilitate this.

The company has also extended its existing network of service station relationships, meaning team members can use toilet facilities at up to 650 service stations facilities across the country.

This is available alongside its existing agreement with An Garda Síochána whereby all GoSafe team members can use toilet facilities at any of its up to 564 Garda stations nationwide, as well as continued availability of toilet facilities at GoSafe’s depots nationwide.

Combined, this provides up to 1,229 toilet facility options for GoSafe staff members at any time.

A statement issued by GoSafe read: “Safety cameras are an important part of the wider road safety programme since 2010. It is important to remind road users that safety cameras continue to be operational with minimal disruption.”
