Very sad news.

A Thai Navy SEAL who was part of the team that rescued 12 boys from Tham Luang cave has died from an illness contracted while participating in the rescue.

The hero, who has been named as Bayroot Pakbara, contracted the infection while taking part in the rescue mission and had been monitored by doctors in the months following the June 2018. He held the rank of Petty Officer First Class in the Thai Navy.

Pakbara becomes the second person to die as a result of their involvement in the rescue. Last summer, diver Saman Gunan died while delivering oxygen tanks to the trapped boys and their coach as they waited for rescue.

According to the Bangkok Post, Pakbara was buried on Friday, having been in and out of hospital with the illness for the last 18 months.

After 17 days submerged in the cave, the 12 boys and their soccer coach were eventually safely rescued.
