Met Éireann issue status yellow wind warnings for seven counties

Paul Moore

The bad weather is coming.

While the last few weeks have been relatively mild for Ireland – we still got rain but for a December, it wasn’t too chilly – the first adverse conditions of the new year will be shortly upon us.

Yep, another year, another series of weather warnings.

Met Éireann have issued two distinct status yellow wind warnings for seven counties in total.

The first status yellow wind warning is in place for Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Kerry.

That particular warning states that “southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with occasional gusts of 90 to 100 km/h.”

The warning is valid from 00:01 on Monday, 6 January and it’s in place until 08:00 on the same day.

Elsewhere, another status yellow wind warning is in place for Wexford, Cork and Waterford.

That warning states that “in coastal areas, southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with occasional gusts of 90 to 100 km/h.”

This warning is valid from 03:00 on Monday, 6 January and it expires at 11:00 on the same day.

In terms of the overall weather forecast for Monday, Met Éireann have stated that it’s set to be be windy for much of the day with strong southerly winds continuing to reach gale force at the coast through the morning.

The rain in western areas will move quickly eastwards in a heavy and persistent band.

As the rain clears the winds will ease for a time and veer westerly with just a few showers to follow, most frequent in the north. Its expected to become cooler as the rain clears.

As for Monday night, winds are expected to reach gale force on the coasts.
