Cases in Ireland have now gone past 16,000.

The National Public Health Emergency Team has confirmed that 44 people have died in the Republic of Ireland after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

The official death toll since the beginning of the outbreak now stands at 730 people, as one death attributed to Covid-19 has since been confirmed as unrelated to coronavirus.

Additionally, 388 new cases of the virus have been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland, taking the official number of cases to 16,040.

It was also reported at Tuesday’s briefing that 55% of the confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland had officially recovered from the illness.

Today’s update follows the announcement on Monday that 77 people had died after being diagnosed with Covid-19. This was by far Ireland’s highest single-day total.

However, Dr. Tony Holohan explained this morning that the deaths reported at the Department of Health briefing on Monday had occurred throughout the past month but they were notified of them on Monday.

Nine more people died of the virus in Northern Ireland today, taking the island-wide death toll to 946.
