27 further deaths due to Covid-19 confirmed, 156 new cases confirmed

27 more lives have been lost to Covid-19.

The National Public Health Emergency Team has confirmed this evening (8 May) that a further 27 people have died as a result of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The latest figures takes Ireland’s known death toll to 1429, taking into account the denotification of one death over the last 24 hours.

Additionally, 156 new cases of the virus have been confirmed, bringing the total known number of cases of the virus to 22,541. 6,586 (29%) of those cases are associated with healthcare workers.

Further details shared by the NPHET reveal that of those who have died from Covid-19, 652 are over the age of 85, with a further  304 between the ages of 80 and 84.

No deaths have been recorded below the age of 14, with deaths increasing for each age bracket upwards of 45-49. Several other young groups have registered fewer than five deaths – thought the Department will not provide exact figures for reasons of patient confidentiality.

The number of cases varies per age group follows less of a pattern, with only 771 cases diagnosed between 65-69, compared to 2,171 for those aged 45-59.
