Number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths on the rise

Rudi Kinsella

“Trends in case numbers and incidence are now being reflected in indicators of disease severity.”

The number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths are on the rise, according to stats shown at a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Professor Philip Nolan spoke about the “narrative” that cases are on the rise but that hospitalisations, deaths and admissions to ICU are not, and said that sadly this is not the case.

He said: “What we would have said was that those things would follow, and sadly those things are following.

“Sadly we expect to see figures rise over the coming weeks unless there is a radical change in transmitting the virus.”

He continued: “The Reproductive number is now estimated at 1.2. If we fail to reduce viral transmission nationwide immediately, we could see 1,100-1,500 cases per day and 300-450 people in hospital by November 7.”

According to the figures released, the number of people in hospital has increased from 122 last Thursday to 156 this afternoon. There are currently 25 people in critical care compared to 20 at this point a week ago.

Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said that the situation has deteriorated since Sunday, and that he is “deeply concerned”.

He said: “We are really, genuinely worried about the state of the disease.”

At the briefing on Wednesday, it was reported that five new Covid-19 related deaths have been confirmed, as well as 611 new cases.
