Sunderland AFC are planning to play a Munster select in Thomond Park this summer in aid of the Shane Geoghegan Trust.

‘A Day for Shane’ is planned for 13 July at the Limerick venue with the Premier League side taking on a selection of international, League of Ireland and Senior club players who all have Munster links.

A day-long programme will encompass sporting events of all codes with the spectacle kicking-off at 7.45pm.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn spoke at the launch of the charity event in Thomond Park, pointing out the benefits of the Trust.

‘The SAFC Foundation, the club’s official charity, has already been over to Limerick to assist the Trust as it rolls out programmes that will help young people to make better life choices and to have enhanced aspirations in the area that Shane lived.

‘We are now bringing the team over to support the ongoing work that the Shane Geoghegan Trust so valuably carries out. All funds from the night will go to this marvellous initiative and we hope to continue supporting it for a long time.’

Shane Geoghegan was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity in the early hours of 9 November 2008 as he made his way home from watching a rugby match with friends in Dooradoyle in Limerick.

The Shane Geoghegan Trust was set up by his friends and family in October last year and aims to provide children with an alternative to criminality.
