436 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Ireland as HSE says cyber attack costs likely to exceed €100 million

Ireland has seen a collapse in the number of deaths relating to Covid-19, according to the HSE CCO.

There have been 436 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Ireland, as the HSE revealed the fallout of the recent cyber attack against the health service will likely cost at least €100 million.

The figures released from the Department of Health on Thursday did not contain information regarding deaths related to Covid-19.

The Department of Health’s statement said that the number of daily cases may also change due to future data validation.

101 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 39 are in ICU.

During a briefing on Thursday, HSE CEO Paul Reid said the cyber attack against the health service is likely to result in costs exceeding €100 million.

He said: “I said at the outset, this will be in tens of millions and there’s no doubt €100 million will be a smaller figure in terms of the total cost of this.

“There will be an initial figure of just trying to get the services back up and there’ll be a further figure in terms of the impact on services.”

According to Reid, costs will be incurred restoring systems and upgrading networks and laptops.

Also during the briefing, HSE CCO Dr Colm Henry revealed that there have been eight reported deaths relating to Covid-19 in the past 12 days.

Speaking about this, he said: “We’ve seen a collapse in the number of deaths, particularly again in older people.”

The number of people who have died with the disease had not been published since the cyber attack on the HSE two weeks ago.
