CONFIRMED: You will not need to be vaccinated to attend events in Ireland this year

Club matches or music gigs will not require proof of vaccination.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed that people will not need to be vaccinated in Ireland in order to attend events later this year.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland on Friday, the Tánaiste said that there will be no requirement to be vaccinated to attend a club match or a music gig when they recommence.

“So the safety will be based on your standard public health precautions such as good hygiene, social distancing and limiting numbers,” Varadkar said.

“There are going to be quite a number of pilot events though.

“Pilot events would see pretty large numbers of people being allowed to gather outdoors – and in some cases – indoors and we’ve yet to work on the details of that and potentially testing might be part of the protocol for that.”

He added: “But the pilot events are separate to what is going to be announced in early July and early August.

“So in July and August, without any requirement of a vaccine or any requirement of a test, people will be able to attend sporting events.

“They will be able to attend musical and cultural events outdoors, so you’re going to see a return to that.”

While he did not confirm that capacity of venues would be limited to 25% as the decision is set to be made by cabinet later on Friday, he did say “that sounds about right”.

He said people would have to wait until later on Friday for that to be confirmed.

In the same interview, Varadkar said that there will be a phased return to international travel in the coming months but warned it will not be international travel “as we used to know it”.

He said that the reopening of international travel would be dependent on vaccines.

“Every week we delay, 300,000 more people are either vaccinated or fully vaccinated,” Varadkar said.

“So, just waiting a month, that’s 1.2 million more vaccines and I think people will understand the sense behind that.”
