A coffin factory has been destroyed in a fire in Tyrone after it was reportedly hit by lightning on Sunday.

Firefighters are still at the scene of the fire which broke out at O’Doherty and Sons Coffin and Casket manufacturers in Railway Street in Strabane.

Around 80 firefighters were said to be battling the blaze at its peak on Sunday.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service’s (NIFRS) said it has been able to scale back its operation on Monday.

Local residents have been advised that Railway Street will remain closed for “the majority” of Monday.

An investigation into the blaze will begin as soon as it is safe to do so and it is hoped to be completed in the next 24 hours.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster’s Good Morning Ulster, District commander Andy Russell said it would be an unusual case if the blaze was started by a lightning strike.
