The man has been named by Gardaí.

A 50-year-old man has died after attempting to stop the theft of his car in Dublin last week.

The man has been named by Gardaí as Ian McDonnell and an investigation has been launched into the fatal incident that occurred on Robinhood Road in Clondalkin, Dublin 22 last Sunday (23 January).

At around 6.15pm, Mr McDonnell was found lying on the roadway with serious life-threatening injuries.

According to a Garda spokesperson, investigations have established that he had attended his business premises locally a short time earlier.

“While present he intervened to prevent the theft of his car, a grey-coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“In doing so, he was carried on the bonnet of his vehicle a distance to where he was discovered.”

Mr McDonnell was taken from the scene by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition, before passing away on Friday evening.

A post mortem will be carried out on Saturday.

An Garda Síochána have expressed their sympathies to Mr McDonnell’s family at this time and said a family liason officer has been assigned to them.

Gardaí at Ballyfermot probing the incident established an investigation team under a Senior Investigating Officer on Sunday.

According to the spokesperson, “significant progress” has been made to date including the interviewing of witnesses, door-to-door enquiries and the harvesting of CCTV images.

The grey-coloured Volkswagen Passat which left the scene of the incident was located on Limekiln Green in Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday and is to be forensically examined.

Meanwhile, a second vehicle involved in the incident, a silver-coloured Toyota Aqua with the registration number 152 D 32687, was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney in Tallaght on Tuesday.

This vehicle is also to be forensically examined.

Gardaí say they are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on Sunday, 23 January evening between 5.30pm and 7pm and who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video dashcam footage.

They are also seeking the public’s assistance on where the grey-coloured Volkswagen Passat was between Sunday, 23 January and Friday, 28 January and where the silver-coloured Toyota Aqua was between Sunday, 23 January and Tuesday, 25 January.

Investigating Gardaí are looking for any information on where either car was parked or if they were seen in any petrol station or other location over the dates listed.

Gardaí are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen either of the cars in the vicinity of Ballymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght, Kylemore Road or Ballyfermot between 6.30pm and 9pm on Sunday, 23 January.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station at (01) 6667600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
