Everton and Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a freak injury during a training match between the Irish development squad and Ireland under 23’s on Friday night.

Duffy, 18, collided with under-23 goalkeeper Adrian Walsh during the game and ruptured the blood supply to his liver as a result. He was treated on the pitch before being moved to the Mater Hospital where he underwent surgery under the care of Professor Gerry McEntee.

Duffy subsequently spent a period of time in intensive care before being moved to the high dependency ward where this morning he was conscious and able to sip water.

Republic of Ireland manager Givoanni Trappatoni has praised Professor McEntee and the Republic of Ireland medical team for acting quickly to prevent a potentially critical situation.

“I would like to thank Dr. Alan Byrne and Prof. John O’Byrne for their quick reaction to Shane’s serious injury,” said Trappatoni.

“As time was critical, had they not acted as they did, Shane’s life could have been in more danger than it already was. On behalf of the FAI, I would also like to praise Prof. Gerry McEntee for conducting the emergency operation and ensuring that Shane was given the best possible attention.”
