The Republic of Ireland are not going to the World Cup in South Africa but they did beat a Paraguay team in a friendly last night who are heading for the finals.

Kevin Doyle and Liam Lawrence scored the goals in Ireland’s 2-1 win against the South Americans at the RDS Arena in Dublin. The Daily Star’s report says that the result puts a “big dent” in Paraguay’s confidence ahead of the World Cup.

Doyle put Ireland in front after eight minutes following a bizarre series of events including Roque Santa Cruz heading the ball against his own crossbar. Lawrence made it two after superb work from Doyle to chest it into his path.

Lucas Barrios nicked one on 58 minutes and Paraguay pressed for an equaliser but Trap’s boys held out to win.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney has promised bags of goals for England in South Africa.

The star striker hasn’t scored in his last seven international appearances but the story which runs in The Sun says that Rooney is saving his prowess in front of goal for the big one.
