Leinster Rugby is set to reveal a financial deficit at the club’s AGM this evening despite having one of its most successful years on record in 2009.
The financial benefits of winning a first Heineken Cup was wiped out by Leinster’s investment in players, coaching, the club’s academy and redeveloping Donnybrook Stadium.
Another major burden is the fact that Leinster has been forced to pay rent for use of the RDS after having out-grown their Donnybrook base.
However, a club spokesperson told the Irish Independent that Leinster was in a strong financial position: “The fact that we have secured our sponsors for the coming season(s) and our season-ticket sales have already surpassed the 11,000 we sold last season means we are confident of being on a comfortable financial and commercial footing in a difficult economic climate.”
