On today’s At the End of the Day we gawp at Guatemala’s portal of doom and mock a large woman with an unfortunate illness.

Pic of the Day (above)

Guatemala cheerfully opens the Gates of Hell, with an enormous sinkhole lying in the wake of tropical storm Agatha.

GUATEMALA 31 MAY – A bird’s eye view of a rather large sinkhole in Guatemala City. The sinkhole opened up Sunday following an absolute soaking from tropical storm Agatha. Although the depth of the sinkhole is unclear for now there are no confirmed deaths since its appearance. Photo: Guatemalan Government website www.guatemala.gob.gt

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Bodyshock – I’m Turning Into a Giant (RTÉ Two 8.00pm)

Peter Crouch-conquering Tanya Angus is currently 32st and 6ft 8ins tall – and can’t stop growing due to the condition acromegalic giganticism. Watch Tanya rescue children’s footballs stuck in trees, batter low-flying airplanes and possibly fall over whilst sightseeing in Guatemala – we’re not buying the above pic was a “sinkhole” excuse.

Sporting highlight: Netherlands Vs Ghana (ESPN, 7.30pm – kick-off at 7.45pm)

You know World Cup fever has taken over when international matches you wouldn’t even contemplate suddenly become must-see TV and tonight’s final warm-up friendly is no exception. Can permanent sick-notes Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie make it to South Africa using unaided limbs? Can Ghana recover from the shocking injury to talisman Michael Essien? Both sides have been drawn in tough groups for the fortnight’s tournament so tonight’s encounter should be telling.

Movie highlight: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (TG4 10.00pm)

An adaptation of Hunter S.Thompson’s notorious semi-autobiographical novel, Director Terry Gilliam brings his typical oddball style to Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro’s respective journalist and lawyer’s drug-addled road trip. Unforgettable, hallucinogenic mayhem ensues. Give your brain over to Terry Gilliam for a couple of hours tonight.

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE is feeling… suicidal

Famed for its ability to stretch meaningless twaddle into 15-minute bulletins, Sky Sports News is the occasionally useful answer to whether sports news can be stretched and reported ad infinitum by increasingly insincere newscasters – just because it can, doesn’t mean it should.

A regular fixture in the JOE office, Sky Sports News can be a great tool of the journalism trade – it even cuts to Cricket news to remind you to stop staring at the TV and do some work. As football fans can attest though, SSN goes right into overdrive on the days of transfer deadlines or World Cup squad announcements, with today being no exception. Cutting to adverts with cheery anchormen shouting – “WHO WILL GO? WHO WILL GO FABIO??” the station devoted hours of airtime to the eternal head-scratcher of our time – Leighton Baines or Stephen Warnock for back-up left-back?

Once the squad was finally announced (a bloody hour late), it was time to cease the endless speculation of who would make it onto the plane to endlessly speculate over what shape the newly-fangled side would take in the coming weeks. Bah, give us Cricket any day.

Thinking of a daliance with an older female? You may want to reconsider.

Boasting between 11,000 and 12,000 MILFs, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front reluctantly agreed to a ceasefire with the incoming Philippine administration this week. The Southern Philippine revolutionary group have warned however that if the new government adopts a “war policy, MILF is prepared to defend itself”, according to the group’s chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal, who raised an Appletini at the prospect.

“It is disgusting that after almost 10 years in office, the peace process was not completed during her (departing President Arroyo’s) term,” Iqbal continued, bemoaning the ten years had ravaged the group’s once-youthful appearances.
