Kick off your weekend correctly with a movie or two!
Loads and loads of rom-coms are also on the movie menu this evening…
The Mountain Between Us – FilmFour – 6.50pm
Kate Winslet and Idris Elba star in this average drama about two survivors of a plane crash who are forced to work together to survive.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web – RTÉ2 – 9pm
The sorta-sequel to Dragon Tattoo, with The Crown’s Claire Foy taking up the lead role. It isn’t nearly as good as that original movie, though.
Alita: Battle Angel – FilmFour – 9pm
Our main pick for tonight is Alita: Battle Angel, a huge blockbuster released in early 2019 that – relatively – went under the radar for most cinema goers. Despite being produced by James Cameron, being filled with an all-star cast, featuring some epic set-pieces and made on a $200 million budget, the movie only just about squeaked out a small profit, but demand has since grown for a sequel.
Alita Battle Angel is also available to watch at home on Disney+ right now. We chatted to Alita herself, Rosa Salazar, about the blockbuster back when it was released in cinemas, and you can check out that interview in full right here:
Notting Hill – RTÉ One – 9.35pm
Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in one of the most beloved rom-coms of all time.
Crazy Rich Asians – BBC Three – 9.55pm
Another really good rom-com, with a young woman (Constance Wu) falling for a rich man (Henry Golding), and then having to win over his ultra-rich, very protective family.
The Five-Year Engagement – Comedy Central Extra – 10pm
And yet another decent rom-com, this time about a loved-up couple (Emily Blunt and Jason Segel) who are forced to rethink their relationship when they keep pushing back the date of their wedding.
Spider-Man: Far From Home – BBC One – 10.40pm
Tom Holland’s take on Spidey goes on a European school trip, only for it to get interrupted by new super-powered arrival, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).
No Strings Attached – MTV – 11pm
What’s with all the rom coms tonight?? Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman star in the one that isn’t Friends With Benefits.
Death Wish 3 – ITV4 – 11.05pm
Charles Bronson’s third outing as the wishing for death guy. 16% on Rotten Tomatoes? Ouch.
Rose Plays Julie – RTÉ One – 11.50pm
A very good dark drama about a woman who tries to seek out our birth mother, only to discover some dark secrets along the way. Orla Brady, Ann Skelly and Aidan Gillan star.
The Wedding Ringer – Comedy Central Extra – 12.25am
Kevin Hart and Josh Gad star in this below average comedy about a wedding gone awry.
Why Him? – Channel 4 – 12.35am
Another not great comedy, this time about a dad (Bryan Cranston) who does not approve of his daughter’s new boyfriend (James Franco).
Rosemary’s Baby – FilmFour – 1.10am
One of the most legendarily scary movies of all time.
