We’re leaving the tennis behind, thankfully. For Thursday it’s two from golf and racing.
In golf, the spotlight will again fall on Tiger Woods who makes another return to action in the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
Woods won this tournament 12 months ago but so much has changed since then. Compounding his extra-curricular problems, he has been out of action for four weeks since pulling out of the Players Championship with a back injury so he can be taken on in a first-round three-ball against one of the tour’s late bloomers.
STEVE STRICKER may be 43 years of age but is fourth in the world, has won four times in the last 18 months and hasn’t missed a cut since the PGA Championship last August. 15/8 looks a decent price against this version of Tiger and a bigger threat may come from Jason Bohn, who has also won on the PGA Tour this year.
In racing, we’re looking at CWM RHONDDA in the 8.55 at Sandown.
Trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam (pictured above with his Derby winner Authorized), Cwm Rhondda was a progressive performer last term winning three 10-furlong Yarmouth handicaps.
She ran very well on her reappearance at Sandown, settled well adrift of the pace, travelling smoothly on the wide outside throughout and quickening smartly two furlongs out before just being edged out by Right Rave.
She looked a surefire future winner that day and while there is a slight doubt about her effectiveness on the Sandown hill over a strongly run ten, she is a five-year-old now and should have strengthened up from last year. She has a good draw in stall 17 and gets on well with today’s pilot Jack Mitchell. We expect her to come there cruising at the furlong pole and hopefully she can see it out up the hill.
