Former UFC middleweight contender Lee Murray has been sentenced to 10 years for his part in the UK’s biggest ever cash raid.

The 30-year-old, who is originally from London, fled to Morocco shortly after the robbery where it was established he was holding Moroccan citizenship.

UK police attempted to have the fighter extradited but the Moroccan authorities refused and instead detained Murray in a Moroccan prison.

Murray has spent the last four years jailed in the North African country and now looks likely to serve another six.

Murray was one of the brightest MMA prospects to come out of the UK in the past decade and even faced off against current UFC middleweight champion Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva.

Murray is believed to have been the mastermind behind the Kent robbery which netted £53m for the raiders.

Some £21 million of the cash, taken when robbers posing as police took the family of a depot manager captive in 2006, has been recovered. The rest is unaccounted for.

Murray’s solicitor Abdellah Benlanhidi has described the verdict as harsh, and pledged to appeal.
