World Cup holders Italy were unable to contain an impressive Mexico side in their penultimate pre-World Cup friendly, going down 2-1 at the final whistle in the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

Arsenal’s Carlos Vela got Mexico off to a dream start before substitute Alberto Medina put his side 2-0 up against the Azzuri.

Mexico dominated for much of the game with Leonardo Bonucci getting a consolation goal for Italy late on in the match.

Mexico will go up against hosts South Africa in the opening game of the tournament on 11 June in Johannesburg.

Among the players who featured for the much-improved Mexicans was Manchester United’s soon-to-be striker Javier Hernandez.

Italy will play their final warm-up match in against Switzerland in Geneva this Saturday before taking on Paraguay in Cape Town on 14 June.
