A group of journalists in South Africa to cover the World Cup have been robbed at gunpoint in their Magaliesburg hotel.

According to reports from PA News, Portuguese photographer Antonio Simoes was pinned down in his bed at gunpoint for a half-an-hour while two robbers gathered £25,000 worth of camera equipment which they then made off with.

Two other journalists had been sharing the three-bedroomed unit at the Nutbush Boma Lodge in Magaliesburg, 75 miles from Johannesburg, but they slept through the attack.

They later discovered that they too had been robbed of various items while they slept.

South Africa has a chronic gun crime problem and there are fears that criminals could target fans and members of the media arriving in the country for the World Cup.
